Pittsboro, NC - The Woods Charter School men's and ladies' basketball teams won their home basketball games on Monday, November 29. The men’s basketball team played against Southern Wake Academy of Holly Springs, soundly defeating the upstart program 69-25. Several non starters and younger players got good playing time in this game.

Led by seniors Preston Ferguson with 23 points and forward Justyn Cyriaque with a career high 13 points and 8 rebounds, the team dominated in all phases of the game.

Coach John Berry stated, “Our effort put forth against Southern Wake Academy was very workman-like. We implemented our formula for success by playing strong defense, opportunistic fast breaking and smart-patient offense. I was especially proud of Preston Ferguson for taking advantage of what was available. I was also pleased by the play of Justyn Cyriaque, Eric Tapp and Osman Sbaiti for fulfilling their roles very well.”

The Wolves improved to 2-1 for the season and travel to take on Emerson Waldorf this Wednesday, December 1 at 4:15 pm and then home on Friday, December 3 for a 4:30 game versus Hopewell Academy. Next Monday, they join the Lady Wolves at Kestrel Heights for the 6:30 showdown and continue into Tuesday, December 7, at home versus Voyager Academy at 6:00 pm.

The Lady Wolves basketball team soundly defeated Grace Christian of Cary for their first win of the season. Kelly Reiter’s buzzer beater at the end of the first quarter set the tone for the whole game.

With some very improved inside passing to junior forward Paige Haswell (8 points, 4 rebounds) and some outstanding shooting from the field by Kelly Reiter, who led all scorers with 12 points and 5 rebounds, the Lady Wolves took a 12-5 lead into the half. Senior Zoe de la Varre, senior Simone Dunphy, and sophomore Mary Rose Hall provided that extra spark needed with some aggressive defensive play, resulting in several steals.

The Lady Wolves won 32-16 and now stand at 1-2 overall.

The ladies play next Monday, December 6 at Kestrel Heights in Durham, starting at 5 pm and then again on Tuesday, December 7 at home versus Voyager Academy, starting at 4:30 pm.
