Pittsboro, NC - The Wolves basketball team has been busy. On December 1, the boys headed to Emerson Waldorf, where they won 52-35. Senior Preston Ferguson led all scorers with 23 points, followed by senior Mike Galin with eight points. Senior Justyn Cyriaque had six points, including his first dunk, and junior Osman Sbaiti also chipped in with six.

The team played home on Friday, December 3 against Hopewell Academy, winning by a final score of 65-15. After storming to a 21-2 lead in the first quarter, coach John Berry pulled the starters, giving most minutes to senior Brett Kennedy, sophomores Daniel Royer and Laurence Daw, and freshmen Brian Rossi and Jared Ballen off the bench. They played strong, with many fast break opportunities, great passing, hustle defense, and solid performances under the basket by the Twin Towers, Royer and Daw.

On Monday, December 6, the Wolves traveled to Kestrel Heights in Durham. Despite a very challenging full court press by Kestrel for the entire first half, both sides struggled overall offensively, missing many shots, lay ups and free throws, making this game a brutal defensive effort.

The game was tied 18-18 at the half and proved to be very physical on both sides, drawing many fouls. Osman Sbaiti, Mike Galin and Preston Ferguson provided extra hustle on defense, as did Jared Ballen with a stellar effort off of the bench. Kestrel took a 12 point lead with 5 minutes left in the game, registering a lopsided final score of 51-35.

The Woods men's basketball team now stands at 4-2 on the season.

The boys play Tuesday, December 7 at home versus Voyager Academy; Friday, December 10 at home versus St. Thomas More Academy; and, Monday, December 13 at home versus Zion Christian Academy. All games start at 6:00 pm.

The Lady Wolves traveled to Kestrel Heights in Durham on Monday, December 6, falling 37-20. Junior forward Paige Haswell led Woods in scoring with 6 points. The girls showed improved discipline in running their offense and executed set plays well. However, they struggled while passing the ball against Kestrel’s pressure defense. This, combined with poor interior defense created a hole from which the team could not dig themselves out. The Lady Wolves are 1-3 on the season and play Voyager Academy at Home on Tuesday, December 7th at 4:30pm.
