Pittsboro, NC - Here is a roundup of what happened in Northwood High School sports the week of April 12, 2010.

NHS girls varsity soccer defeats Granville Central

The Charger ladies controlled a very under staffed Granville Central team Wednesday evening 9-0. With a game plan to use two and three touch passes, switch fields, transition, etc., NHS built a 5-0 halftime lead. With the second half reduced to a twenty minute running clock the ladies added four more goals to close the scoring. Anna Elkins

and Annie Cleaver had two goals each, Katie McGrath, Casey Norris, Darien Skinner, Emily Brooks and Yancey Luft all had one goal. Rebecca Moore, Katie McGrath, Casey Norris, Emily Brooks, Anna Elkins, Laura Shachtman, Hannah Lawrence and Maggie Denny all had one assist. The team improves to 5-1-1 with a key conference match with Raleigh Charter Friday Night at home.

JV Charger baseball rallies to defeat Orange 8-7 on Wed. April 14

Steven Strong hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh that scored Jeremiah Jacobs who had drew a one out walk as the JV Charger Baseball team rallied from a 7-4 deficit in the sixth and seventh innings to defeat Hillsborough Orange 8-7. Chase Golden led the JV Chargers at the plate as he went 4 for 4, scored three runs, and stole two bases. Ross Cooper added two singles and two stolen bases as he reached base safely in three of his four plate appearances. Patrick Dufour collected the other Charger hit on the night.

Montgomery Kirby came in to pitch the top of the seventh to earn the victory after a strong outing by starter Robert Straughn who only allowed four hits while striking out six. Russ Smith pitched two strong innings in relief as well.

Jordan Riggsbee, Ross Cooper, Jeremiah Jacobs, Chase Golden, and Robert Straughn all contributed RBI singles for the JV Chargers.

Northwood JV soccer defeats Cedar Ridge 2 - 0 on Wed. April 14

A great game was played by all with greatly improved passing over previous games. The first goal was scored by Maria Vanderford with an assist from Gabby Mehringer with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. The second goal was scored by Gabby Mehringer with an assist from jasmine Sanderford six minutes later. Northwood dominated play for most of the game with strong defensive efforts provided by the backs and the midfield. Everyone had the opportunity to play and to play in different positions.

The Men’s Tennis team lost to Raleigh Charter on Friday, April 16, 5-4.

Winning for the Chargers were: Christian Manhard, Jacky Dufour, and Ryan Smith in singles matches. Trevor Cox and Frederico DeMichele won in doubles play. The Men’s Tennis team has a home match today at 4:30 versus Cedar Ridge..

With a determined second half rally the lady Chargers defeated Raleigh Charter 2-1.

After controlling most of the first half and taking numerous shots on goal the Northwood side could not find the back of the net. RC took three shots on goal and converted one right before the half to take a 1-0 lead. With about twenty minutes remaining Darien Skinner pressured the ball resulting in a negative pass that was picked off by Anna Elkins and placed neatly in the left side of the RC net for a 1-1 tie. With six minutes remaining Casey Norris placed a long throw-in in the six yard box that Anna Elkins tapped in for the 2-1 win. The Charger defense of Sarah McCaw, Allie Gray, Yancey Luft, April Gibbs and Laura Shachtman did a great job of supressing the RC attack all evening. The combination passing, talk and movement in the second half was the key to the NHS win.

JV Baseball team defeated Jordan Matthews Friday afternoon, April 16, 20-10 at Jordan Matthews.
Steven Strong earned the win on the mound for the JV Chargers while Robert Straughn, his battery mate, had a strong defensive game behind the plate. Montgomery Kirby and Jordan Riggsbee pitched well in relief of Strong. All 16 Chargers played and contributed in the win.

Ethan Stubbs, Jordan Riggsbee, Clark Streets, and Patrick Dufour all had two hits for the JV Chargers. Stubbs ripped two doubles, while Dylan Stasko and Barrett Beasley added RBI singles. Chase Golden and Jordan Riggsbee scored three runs.

Varsity Softball team defeated Granville Central in six innings Friday, April 16, 12-2 at NHS.

Lauren Oldham went 5 for 5 and Crystal Overcash reached base safely in her first four plate appearances with two hits and two walks to lead the Lady Chargers at the plate. Carrie Webster earned the win on the mound as she allowed only four hits and struck out nine Lady Panthers.
