Pittsboro, NC - Here's a roundup of what happened in sports at Northwood High School last week.

The JV and Varsity Volleyball teams defeated Overhills High from Harnett County in straight sets Monday evening here at NHS.

In the JV game, Alexyss Hedrick had 14 points, Kerri Snipes played well at the net throughout the match, and Hannah Lawrence had a tremendous game setting throughout the match. The JV Lady Chargers won the match in straight sets, 25-21, 25-14.

In the Varsity game, behind the first set serving of Danielle Helgans and Brennan Allen the Lady Chargers stormed back from a slow start and early first set deficit to win in straight sets 25-17, 25-19, and 25-21. The Lady Chargers did not trail after their slow start in the first set again until mid-way through the third set. Olivia Oakley and Emily Brown dominated at the net throughout the night keeping the Lady Chargers in the lead for the majority of the contest. Emily Brown served the Lady Chargers to a big lead midway through the second set. Alexis County also had a nice all around game for the Lady Chargers.

JV and Varsity Volleyball Defeat Granville Central Tuesday Evening

The Varsity Volleyball team improved to 5-0 Tuesday in a Carolina 9 Conference victory over Granville Central here at NHS. Olivia Strowd led the way with 20 digs in the match while Olivia Oakley added 2 aces, 11 hits, 2 kills, and 5 blocks. Brennan Allen contributed 7 hits in the match while Allie County, Sara McCaw, Anna Elkins, and Emilie Brown contributed numerous successful digs throughout the match.

The Lady Charger JV Volleyball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a three set, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18 come from behind victory over Granville Central in the first game Tuesday evening. Alexyss Hedrick led the JV Lady Chargers with 20 overall points in the match, while Hannah Lawrence added 17 points, and Kerri Snipes and Anna Brown added 11 points.

NHS Boys Varsity Soccer Rolls to 7-1 win over Western Harnett Wednesday night 9/1

Juan Young scored less than two minutes into Wednesday night’s soccer match as the Varsity Soccer team rolled to a 7-1 victory over Western Harnett to complete a season sweep of the Eagles. Joseph Graybeal added the second Charger goal less than two minutes later to extend the Charger lead quickly to 2-0. Paul Candelori made it 3-0 six minutes into the match, before Austin Brice converted a penalty kick just over 10 minutes into the match to extend the Charger lead to 4-0. Candelori added his second goal of the night ten minutes later to push the lead to 5-0. Austin Moody added a goal right before the end of the half to give the Chargers a 6-0 lead at the break. Austin Brice added a second goal in the second half as the Chargers cruised to a 7-1 triumph.

Girls Golf Team Wins recent match

The Northwood Girls Golf team took 1st place by 8 strokes in a Central Carolina Conference match on Monday, August 31st. Emily Brooks medaled with a score of 37. The next C.C. Conference match is on Tuesday, September 8 at The Golf Club at Chapel Ridge.

Volleyball Teams Fall to Conference Rival Carrboro Thursday 9/3

In the JV game, Carrboro won in straight sets 25-17 and 25-19. Alexyss Hedrick and Hannah Lawrence played well for the JV Lady Chargers despite the loss.

The Varsity Volleyball team also lost in straight sets at Carrboro on Thursday.
Next home volleyball matches are Tuesday versus DSA with the JV game beginning at 5.
