Cary, NC - The Northwood Varsity Soccer team concluded a very successful season Saturday, November 21 falling to Shelby 2-1 in the 2A State Soccer Championship. The Chargers, playing less than one day after traveling to and defeating perennial state soccer power Swansboro 1-0 Friday night at Croatoan High School, fell behind 1-0 less than 4 minutes in on a bad hop goal by the Lions' Kevin Petty after the ball had come into contact with a Northwood player. The Chargers would hold the deficit to 1-0 at the half.

The score would remain 1-0 until the 14 minute mark of the second half when the Lions' Jerry Zeller connected giving the Lions a 2-0 lead.

The Chargers would fight back from this point forward playing their best soccer of the night as they constantly attacked the Lions' goal for the rest of the match. Their hard work and persistence paid off at the 7:45 mark when Senior Sam Lucier scored to cut the Lions' lead to 2-1. The Chargers' rally was not thwarted until the 40 second mark when Senior Joe Graybeal's throw in was cleared by the Lions effectively allowing the Lions to run out the rest of the clock.

Sam Lucier, Ramiro Martinez, Austin Brice, Peter Theilgard, Joe Graybeal, and Jovanni Catalan each had shots on goal during the match.

This game marked the end of outstanding high school soccer careers for Seniors Jovanni Catalan, Peter Theilgard, Sam Lucier, Patrick Myers, Ramiro Martinez, Joe Graybeal, Austin Brice, Geralexander Frazier, and Brandon Green.

Congrats to these Senior leaders, Coach Frazier, Coach Morrow, First Responder Al Forbes, and the rest of the soccer team on a great season and for representing Northwood High School admirably on Saturday evening.
