Raleigh - Alex White fired a two-hitter and Greenville D.H. Conley came up with timely hits as the Vikings knocked off South Mecklenburg 3-1 on Saturday evening to sweep the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A baseball championship series at N.C. State University's Doak Field.

Conley had won the opener of the series on Friday night in eight innings, 2-1.

White, a junior righthander, carried a no-hitter into the fifth and kept the Sabre bats at bay all evening.

Senior pitcher-shortstop Aubrey Edens of Conley was named the Most Valuable Player of the series. On Friday night, he earned his 13th victory of the year, going the distance, and paced the Conley offense with three hits in four trips, driving in both of his team¹s runs. In Saturday's game, his double to lead off the sixth led to the Conley go-ahead runs.

Conley took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Jason Cargile walked, stole both second and third and then tallied on a double by Tanner Jones. But the Sabres came back to tie it in the home half of the fifth on an RBI single by Zac Kennedy.

Edens led off the Conley sixth with a double and later scored on a single by Jones, his second RBI of the night. Jones wound up scoring on a Mike Taylor sacrifice fly.

Mark Potter and Jones each had two hits for the Vikings, who finished 24-7 and won 11 of their last 12. It was Conley¹s first NCHSAA baseball championship.

Conley had superb pitching throughout the series, limiting the Sabres to just two runs in two games. South came into the championship with a team batting average of .352 and had scored 10 or more runs in a single game 16 times.

South Mecklenburg finished 24-8 on the year.
