Pittsboro, NC - The Chatham County Parks and Recreation department invites all Chatham County residents to the grand opening for the newly constructed Northeast District Park located on 5408 Big Woods Road is slated for August 19 from 5 to 8 pm. The event will include a ceremony, activities and games for all ages.

In the summer of 2007, the Board of County Commissioners approved the purchase of 66 acres of land on Big Woods Road as the site of a new Northeast District Park, which has been in the Park & Recreation Master Plan since 1999. The land was purchased using funds from the county's recreation fee paid by developers when land is subdivided into lots of 10 acres or less.

On Sept. 7, 2010, the Chatham County Board of Commissioners awarded a bid for the first phase of construction with substantial grant funding to support the costs. The board also permanently set aside 15.3 acres of the park as a conservation easement using a $208,486 grant from the Clean Water Management Trust Fund (CWMTF).

The commissioners approved the bid award of $1.46 million to Modern South Construction for phase one construction. This phase included:

  • walking trail
  • baseball field
  • tennis court
  • multipurpose field (soccer, football, etc.)
  • restroom/concession building
  • picnic shelter
  • playground
  • parking and entry road

Phase one is funded with a combination of $838,486 in grants and the remainder from the county’s Parks Capital Reserve, with a total budget of $2,016,705. The largest grant is $500,000 from the State Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. The property for the park was purchased with recreation fees paid by developers.

The state gamelands adjacent to the park forbids the use of firearms in the gamelands around the park. Signage is posted to indicate that only bow shooting is allowed in this area during hunting season.

While the park will be open to the public for general use, grass for the athletic fields must be in suitable condition for those programs to begin. This means that baseball, softball and soccer programs will not begin until the spring of 2012 and football will begin in the fall of 2012.
