Miami completes series sweep of Duke with Sunday’s 7-1 win

Durham, NC – Miami starter Scott Maine held Duke to two hits in 8.0 shutout innings to lead the Hurricanes to a 7-1 victory over the Blue Devils on Sunday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. Duke falls to 8-16 overall and 1-5 in the ACC while Miami, who won their 15th consecutive game, improves to 21-6 overall and 6-0 in league action.

Maine (4-0) gave up two singles and walked just one while striking out four batters to pick up his fourth victory of the season.

The Hurricanes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI-single up the middle by shortstop Walter Diaz.

In the top of the fifth inning, Miami catcher Eddy Rodriguez turned on the first pitch he saw from Duke starter Jonathan Anderson and blasted his fifth home run of the season over the left field wall to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead.

Miami then scored three times in the top of the sixth to take a 5-0 lead. Second baseman Jemile Weeks led off the frame with a triple to left field. Center fielder Jon Jay followed with an RBI-single up the middle, scoring Weeks. After first baseman Yonder Alonso drew a walk, third baseman Danny Valencia laid down a sacrifice bunt to give the Hurricanes runners on second and third. Right fielder Tommy Giles then hit a two-run ground-rule double to left, scoring Jay and Alonso to give Miami a five-run lead.

The Hurricanes added a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Alonso to take a 6-0 lead. In the top of the ninth, Weeks turned on a 2-2 offering from Duke lefty Sean O’Brien and lined a solo shot over the left field wall to cap the scoring for Miami.

The Blue Devils would score in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI-single by shortstop Brett Bartles for their only run of the game. After second baseman Javier Socorro was hit by a pitch, catcher Matt Williams reached on a bunt single to give the Blue Devils runners on first and second. Bartles then line his RBI-single to left to score Socorro.

Anderson (1-2) suffered his second loss of the season, allowing five runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work.

Bartles led Duke at the plate, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Anderson, Williams and right fielder Tim Sherlock were the only other Blue Devils to record a hit in the game.

The Hurricanes were led by Weeks, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Giles went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Diaz was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

The Blue Devils will return to the diamond on Tuesday night at Jack Coombs Field when they host the first game of a two-game series against Maryland-Baltimore County. Duke will then host UMBC on Wednesday afternoon before traveling to Tallahassee, Fla., for a three-game series with Florida State.
