Take a deep breath and remain calm

Moncure, NC - For me, it was a reckoning day. I thought I had seen and heard everything during my service on the BOC, but now, I reckon I had not!

I do have a real distaste for being blind-sided by my peers! No reason for it. As the Board majority planned to cut the budget review process, I would have thought it appropriate to advise the minority members in advance of such action. But that is apparently the nature of Chatham politics.
When scheduled events, in this case our budget process, are unexpectedly and abruptly changed, it does affect peoples lives and plans. There’s no wonder public emotions are all over the board… from elated to disgusted. We are rarely all elated or all disgusted at the same time!
Did I know this vote would be called early? Obviously not. What did I feel when the vote was called? Surprised and Betrayed.
 Deep Breath…remain calm
Will the World stop rotating? Unlikely.
Will Chatham disappear into a black hole? Also unlikely.
Did the Manager and Executive Staff present a budget proposal as directed by the BOC Majority? Absolutely.
Do I think the budget is basically sound? Yes.
Having attended the UNC School of Government – Essentials of County Government Course - several times and hearing their staff consistently praise Chatham’s budget process as the best in the state and a process which all NC counties should employ, I have to wonder if their respect will go away. It has been a source of Chatham Pride for me and others for a long time.
The bottom line…our budget - is what it is, at least for now, but we still have a proposed budget amendment process. I am sure there will be some proposals forthcoming. As a matter of fact, I sent a request in today concerning watershed protection and requested an agenda spot in the near future. Chairman Bock has already responded with an agenda slot on June 20th.
Life can certainly be unsettling when you’re not in charge!

…but we will work through this together. A little compromise is good for the soul!
