Gangs in Chatham County

Gangs! … in our communities?! We had an interesting and timely multi-presentation concerning gang mobilization, graffiti, associated revenue sources and violence.

Detective Keith Dodson, Durham County Sheriff’s Gang Unit was the primary overview presenter followed by the Chapel Hill police gang unit and the Chatham County Sheriff’s gang unit.

This was a very eye-opening meeting! Chatham county is apparently already host to three gangs ... and has been used as a “drop-off” location for a victim of gang violence thought to have occurred in Durham county.

Siler City has been identified as home for two Latino gangs and one African-American gang.

Gang graffiti is easily found in Siler City and some has recently appeared in Pittsboro. All graffiti is not gang related, but we saw photos of plenty that is … and they were specific.

Our school resource officer in Siler City is well acquainted with several students who are self-professed gang members, some well acquainted with our prison system and appear on the National Gang Website.

Along with these gangs comes thug behavior, increased theft, breaking and entering, robbery, prostitution and drug issues to finance their operations. Then comes turf problems which generally result in violence … which often includes innocent citizens.

Plans are being coordinated among our law enforcement agencies and we are seeking a $50,000 grant to be used for gang prevention and education programs. Hopefully, we will be able to come up with some workable ideas.

Public awareness will be at the top of our list!
