Raleigh, NC - On the morning of January 26, 2008, NC State students and the greater Raleigh at the NC State Belltower for the 4th Annual Krispy Kreme Challenge, a fun charity fundraiser for the North Carolina Children’s Hospital. What began as a college dare among a few friends has now turned into a new NC State tradition. Nearly 1400 people took part in 2007.
2400 calories, 12 doughnuts, 4 miles, In less than 1 hour, All to benefit the North Carolina Children’s Hospital!
The event involves running two miles from the NC State Belltower to the Krispy Kreme store on Peace St., eating a dozen doughnuts, then running back to touch the Belltower. To successfully complete the challenge, this must all be done in under one hour. The current record for fastest time, set in 2007 by Auburn Staples, is a mind-blowing 24 minutes and 32 seconds.
The Krispy Kreme Challenge has grown rapidly in four short years. Last year, 1400 participants helped raise $10,000 for the North Carolina Children’s Hospital. The event received tremendous publicity from the campus and local Raleigh media. It has even been mentioned in Sports Illustrated: On Campus.
This year, the organizing committee is spreading the word about it throughout the Raleigh community, from high schools to local running clubs. Nearly 1900 people have already registered, and at least 3000 participants are expected this year. The event has enjoyed the continued support of Herman Dubose, owner of the Krispy Kreme store of Raleigh, Jim Michaels, owner of Raleigh Running Outfitters, and Raleigh-based apparel company Bay Six USA. This year, donations and prizes will from local businesses such as Village Draft House and Ba Da Wings.
Online registration is open at krispykremechallenge.com. Participants can register as a full challenger and take on the challenge of all dozen donuts, or as a casual runner a and simply enjoy the event. T-shirts can also be purchased online for $10.
The Krispy Kreme Challenge will start at 9:00am on January 26, 2008, with on-site check-ins beginning at 8:00am. There will be additional pre-race check-ins the week leading up to the race. The participants will run a route that takes them down Peace St.
to the Krispy Kreme store at the intersection of Peace St. and Person St.
