Northwood boys' basketball team loses in Mid State 2A Conference Championship game

Burlington, NC - The Northwood High School varsity boys' basketball team fought valiantly and led by 1 at the half, but after cutting the lead to two on a pull up three by Juan Young with under three minutes remaining, the Cummings Cavaliers pulled away the rest of the game eventually winning the Mid State 2A Conference Championship 75-68.

Jake Houck led the Chargers on the night with 20 points on 5 for 8 three point shooting to go along with 3 assists. Ridge Smith paced the Chargers to the halftime lead with 10 first half points. AJ Farmer teamed up with Houck to carry the scoring load in the second half as he scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half, 9 of those in the fourth quarter. Farmer also collected 12 rebounds and two blocked shots on the night. Terrance Hackney made his presence felt inside throughout the night with 9 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds, and two blocked shots. Despite not scoring on the night, Harold Baldwin contributed a nice all around game tying Terrance Hackney with a team high 5 assists, to go along with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and a blocked shot.

Chris Forbes made significant contributions off the bench throughout the night with 7 points and 4 rebounds as he saw significant playing time. Juan Young also came off the bench and made significant contributions as he scored 5 points, including a big, pull-up 3 pointer with under three minutes left that cut the lead to 65-63. Young also had 7 rebounds and a steal on the night. Damien Simmons also came off the bench late in the first half and provided a key defensive stop and rebound late in the half that allowed the Chargers to go to the half with a one point lead.

The Chargers return to action tonight at home at 7 pm versus Southern Vance in the first round of the state 2A playoffs where they look to make a run for the North Carolina High School 2A Title.
