The Northwood High School Cheerleaders recently joined 141 other cheerleaders at a National Cheerleaders Association summer camp held on the campus of North Carolina State University.

Both the Northwood Junior Varsity and Varsity Cheerleading squads received top honors for the week and were selected as Top Team Winner. To be selected as Top Team Winner, teams competed on the last day of camp with a cheer that they learned during the week. Technical skills as well as the ability to lead the crowd were criteria. By being selected as Top Team Winner, both squads received an invitation to perform at either the Orange Bowl in Florida, or the Hula Bowl in Hawaii. Both squads also received Top Team Winner last summer.

In addition, the JV and Varsity squads were selected as spirit stick winners. Spirit Sticks were presented to squads showing the most sincere spirit and enthusiasm throughout the entire week of camp. The Varsity squad also received an award for best motions.

Several individuals received awards based on their individual skills and performances. Nine individuals from Varsity and three from JV were selected as All-American Nominees. To be selected as an All-American Nominee, individuals had to display outstanding strength in cheer motions and technique, leadership ability, and/or overall attitude at camp. Nominees from the Varsity Squad included Morris Worrell, Katie Mills, Megean Collins, Katelin Vess, Rebecca Williams, Faith Strowd, Jenny Pendergrast, Heather Anderson, and Elizabeth Parks. Nominees from the JV squad included Amber Nickerson, Gena Kirkman, and Hope Markham. Nominees could choose to audition as a prestigious All-American Team Member. Participants vying for All-American status were judged on motion technique, jumps, tumbling, spirit and enthusiasm, voice projection and overall crowd appeal. These individuals are eligible to perform at various NCA Special Events. Individuals selected as All-American Team Members from Northwood included Gena Kirkman, Megean Collins, Katelin Vess, Rebecca Williams, Faith Strowd, Heather Anderson, and Jenny Pendergrast. Jenny Pendergrast was selected as an NCA Top All-American and received an application to be part of the NCA Summer Camp Staff for 2005.
