Stem, NC — The Carrboro Jaquars defeated the Northwood Chargers, 50-42, in the championship game of the Carolina 12 Basketball Tournament at Granville Central. Carrboro used a 14-2 run in the final five minutes to avenge the two regular-season losses to the Northwood.
A key timeout by Alcox seemed to stop Northwood when the Chargers held a 40-36 lead. From there, Northwood didn’t score again until Aumad Walker hit a baseline jumper with 20. 2 seconds left.
After tying the game at 36, Carrboro fell behind by four points before going on the decisive run that gave many Jaguars seniors their first win over Northwood.
The Jaguars, who captured their first boys’ basketball conference title in the school’s five-year history, were led by Keenan Van Name, who had 21 points, and Marlin Johnson with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Chargers (19-7) still get the conference’s top seed going into the state 2-A playoffs next week, and Carrboro will be the No. 2 team coming out of the Carolina 12.
