Pittsboro, NC - Northwood opened its 2006 football schedule last weekend by thrashing Union Pines, 35-13. This week they defeated Western Harnett, 38-12. For the first time since 2003, the Northwood Chargers are off to a 2-0 season start.

A week after downing Union Pines, the Chargers (2-0) won again, using four Tobias Palmer touchdowns to beat Western Harnett (0-2) in the Chargers' home opener.

In last week's 41-13 loss to Fuquay-Varina, Western Harnett Eagles scored only on two kickoff returns by Devin Lee and was held to 29 yards total offense. In that game, Northwood's Tobias Palmer scored four times in the first half on scoring plays of 57, 27, five and 13 yards. He finished the game with 10 carries for 102 yards.

In the game against Harnett, Palmer led the Chargers' offense, rushing for 112 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Palmer also returned a kickoff 82 yards for a score in the first half and caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Joaqin Green.

Devin Lee led Western Harnett with 72 yards rushing on 15 carries. Chargers' kicker Jordan Robinson was 5-for-5 on extra point attempts and hit a 38-yard field goal for Northwood's first points.

The Chargers were 9-4 overall and co-champions in the Class 2-A Mid-State Conference last year. Standout tailback Tobias Palmer has 4.35 speed and rushed for over 1,600 yards as a sophomore in 2005. After the first two games of this season the junior has rushed for a total of 214 yards.

This week's win avenged a 27-7 loss against Western Harnett last season. The Chargers will try to go 3-0 next Friday at home against the cross-county rivals Jordan-Matthews Jets from Siler City, NC.
