Farmville Central wins game one of NCHSAA 1-A baseball series, beats Chatham Central 5-2

RALEIGH - Senior outfielder Brandon Cox had three hits and drove in a pair of runs as Farmville Central downed Chatham Central 5-2 on Friday afternoon in the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A baseball championship series at Doak Field on the N.C. State University campus.

Farmville struck for a pair of runs in each of the first two innings and held the Bears at bay to improve its record to 19-10. Chatham Central fell to 28-5.

The Jaguars took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a run-scoring single by Craven Taylor and a sacrifice fly by Spencer Albritton. Then in the second inning Cox, who entered the series batting 412, drove home a run with a single and a Chatham error allowed another to score to make it 4-0.

Chatham Central got a run back in the third and then scored again in the sixth on an RBI single by Cole Hudson, but Cox drove home his second run of the game in the bottom of the inning and the Jaguars held on to win.

Senior righthander Brad Bagley went the distance on the mound, scattering 11 hits and earning his 12th pitching victory of the season against three losses. The losing pitcher was Spencer Andrews (3-2).

Will Rhem had two hits in three trips for the winners while Randy Nall, Seth Kivett and Hudson each had a pair of hits for Chatham Central.

Game two in the series is scheduled for Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Doak Field. If Chatham Central wins, the decisive game of the series will be played Sunday afternoon at two o'clock.
