Chapel Hill - Some excellent matchups will highlight the 89th annual edition of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association's state baseball championship series, scheduled for this weekend.

Three of the series, including the 1-A, 3-A and 4-A championships, will be played at Doak Field on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh. The 2-A series is scheduled for Wakefield High School in Raleigh. Action starts on Friday in all of the series, which are best of three games.

Greenville D.H. Conley (22-7) rallied from a game down in the best-of-three Eastern series to beat Lumberton and earn its spot in the state 4-A championship series, after knocking off defending 4-A champion and nearby rival Greenville Rose in the state quarterfinals. The Vikings will face tough South Mecklenburg (24-6) for the state crown.

The Vikings are paced by Alex White, who is batting .363 and leads the team in homers (4) and RBI (20) while also sporting a 3-1 mound mark and 0.44 ERA. South Mecklenburg counters with tremendous balance, as the Sabres have a sizzling team batting average of .352 and team earned run average of 1.62.

Ryan Morris is the South Mecklenburg leader, batting .432 to go with a pitching mark of 6-3 and 2.07 ERA.

In the 3-A final, Southern Alamance's Patriots (25-4) will take on Northwest Cabarrus (24-7). Northwest has a couple of heavy hitters in juniors Kyle Seager and Jarod Faggart. Seager is batting a sizzling .462 with eight home runs and 46 RBI, while Faggart has seven homers and 30 RBI to go with a .440 average.

Southern Alamance is seeking its third NCHSAA state baseball title but first since 1988. The Pats, the 3-A runners-up in 1992, have won 17 of their last 18 games. Brent Haynes is batting a sterling .495 for Southern Alamance and is 8-0 on the mound with a 1.13 ERA.

The 1-A championship sends Farmville Central (18-10) against Chatham Central (28-4). Chatham Central knocked off Bessemer City on Tuesday night by an 11-2 count to take the Western series and move into the championship round.

The Jaguars of Farmville have come on strong after a 2-4 start. Brandon Cox is batting .412 to lead the Jags while Brad Bagley is 11-3 on the mound with a 1.72 ERA. Chatham Central has won a school-record 28 games, led by Yadkin Valley Conference Player of the Year Seth Kivett. Kivett is 10-0 as a pitcher with a 2.66 ERA and has swatted eight home runs to go with a .374 batting average.

In the 2-A series at Wakefield, North Lenoir (22-4) will battle Black Mountain Charles D. Owen (22-6). North makes its first appearance in a state championship baseball series, led by a pair of sophomore pitchers in Sthil Sowers (9-1, 1.08 ERA) and Brandon Sutton (7-1, 2.30 ERA). Taylor Ginn leads the Hawks in most offensive categories.

The Warhorses of Owen are in their fourth state final, but are still looking for its first state championship after finishing as runners-up in 1990, '91 and '94. Steven Hensley of Owen was the Western Highlands Conference Player of the Year and is batting a whopping .543 to go with a 7-3 pitching mark and 0.97 ERA.
