The Chatham Central Bears are going to the state championship series.
The team that had played five one-run games in the state 1-A tournament - including Game 2's 2-1 loss Saturday night - beat Bessemer City 11-2 in Game 3 Tuesday night to win the West Regional championship series.
The Bears will face the East Regional champion, Farmville Central (18-9), in a best-of-three series this weekend at N.C. State's Doak Field. The series begins Friday with Game 1 at 2 p.m. Game 2 will be played at 11 a.m. Saturday and, if necessary, Game 3 will be played at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Chatham Central reaches the state finals for the fifth straight decade, winning in 1976 and 1997. The Bears will likely start Spencer Andrews in Game 1.
