Raleigh, NC - When lightning hit the stadium Friday night and knocked out power at Doak Field, that marked the end of play in the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A baseball championship series on the N.C. State University campus.

The game was suspended with one out in the top of the fifth during a second rain delay. Chatham Central was leading West Columbus by a score of 8-6 in the first game of the best-of-three series.

The 1-A opener will resume on Saturday morning at eleven o'clock, weather permitting, to be followed by the first game of the 4-A series between Scotland and South Caldwell.

West Columbus opened the scoring with a run in the first before the Bears erupted for five in the home half of the second, keyed by a three-run double by pitcher Keith Josey.

West tied the game in the top of the fourth with three runs after a rain delay, but Chatham Central answered with three in the bottom of the frame. The big blow was a bases-loaded triple by Aubrey Johnson.

Daniel Britt hit a solo home run for the Vikings in the top of the fifth, his seventh of the year, to cut it 8-6 before play was suspended.

Devon Brown had three hits and Ryan McCleney two for West Columbus, currently 27-2 overall. Josey had a pair of hits for the Bears, 25-6, before the suspension of play.

If weather and time permit, the second games of both the 1-A and 4-A series will be played later on Saturday.
