Raleigh, NC - Chatham Central held off a couple of rallies by West Columbus to take a 9-8 victory Saturday in the completion of the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A baseball championship series on the N.C. State University campus.

The game was suspended with one out in the top of the fifth during a second rain delay with Chatham Central leading West Columbus by a score of 8-6 on Friday night.

The game was originally rescheduled to resume at 11 a.m. Saturday, didn’t get underway until 11:50. Light rains fell in the area until about 9:30. The NC State grounds crew was finally able to remove the tarp from the Doak Field infield around 10:30. After about an hour’s worth of work, they got the field in shape for game play.

A grounder down the third-base line was nabbed by Chatham Central’s Matthew Brown, who dove to tag Brett Godwin for the final out of the game.

Spencer Andrews of Chatham Central hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth when play resumed Saturday morning to give the Bears a 9-6 advantage, and then Chatham Central had to quell a West two-out rally in the top of the seventh that cut the margin to 9-8.

The Vikings got the go-ahead run on base with two outs in the top of the seventh. A grounder down the third-base line by Timothy Brown was nabbed by Chatham Central’s Matthew Brown, who dove to tag Brett Godwin for the final out of the game.

The Vikings had also threatened in the fifth and sixth but the Bears came up with a double play in each frame to end the threat.

Devon Brown had three hits for West Columbus, including a single, double and triple, while Brett Godwin and Ryan McCleney also had three hits for West, now 27-3. Daniel Britt had a solo homer for the Vikings,

D.J. Dean and Keith Josey each had two hits for the winners, who improved their record to 26-6.

West Columbus had opened the scoring Friday night with a run in the first before the Bears erupted for five in the home half of the second, keyed by a two-run double by pitcher Keith Josey.

West tied the game in the top of the fourth with three runs after a rain delay, but Chatham Central answered with three in the bottom of the frame. The big blow was a bases-loaded triple by Aubrey Johnson.
