Northwood basketball team wins first game of the State 2A playoffs

Pittsboro, NC - The Northwood High School boys basketball team advanced to the second round of the State 2A Playoffs with a 62-40 victory over Southern Vance Monday night at a home game. With the win, the Chargers secured a trip to Goldsboro Wednesday night for their Second Round game.

After building a 33-27 lead at the half, the Chargers outscored the visiting Raiders 14-5 in the third quarter to blow the game open, and likewise outscored the Raiders 15-8 in the fourth quarter en route to a 22 point victory. Ridge Smith led three Chargers in double figures with 17 points, 11 of those in the first half. Smith also led the team in assists with 9. Jake Houck added 14 points, including 2 3 pointers and several steals and driving lay ups throughout the game. AJ Farmer added 10 points to go along with 5 rebounds.

Terrance Hackney continued his dominating play inside with 8 points and 8 rebounds to go along with 4 blocks and three steals in limited time due to foul trouble. Harold Baldwin added 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals and tenacious defense throughout the game. Juan Young came off the bench and collected 7 rebounds, dished out three assists, and snatched two steals. Chris Forbes and senior Cameron Goodwin also scored, Goodwin's exclamation point three closed out the scoring with under a minute left in the game.

A win in Goldsboro on Wednesday night will result in the Chargers playing at home Friday night in the third round of the State 2A playoffs.
