Washington Shines for NC State Offense

The Wolfpack football team scrimmaged for two hours under sunny skies on Saturday morning, as NC State enters its last week of spring workouts. The offense dominated the first half of the scrimmage, while the defense picked up the intensity in the second half.

Bobby Washington highlighted the day, rushing for 152 yards on 16 carries while working with the second-team offense. Reggie Davis also had some good runs while working with the first team, while TB Darrell Blackman sat out with an ankle sprain.

"Bobby definitely stood out today," said head coach Chuck Amato following the scrimmage. "He continues to improve." The rising sophomore scored on a 59-yard run during the regular scrimmage and also scored during goalline drills.

Leroy Harris and John Holt sat out with injuries, while several other offensive linemen had to leave early for a field trip. "Our protection broke down later in the scrimmage when we lost some of those guys," Amato continued. "Early on, the offense didn't turn it over and didn't have penalties - they were moving the ball up and down the field. Later, when the protection broke down, all of those things happened."

Starting quarterback Jay Davis hit Tramain Hall on a 55-yard scoring throw and also scored three times on goalline drills. Hall also caught a 23-yarder from Marcus Stone. "The quarterbacks were sharper today than in last week's scrimmage," said Amato. "They are definitely getting better."

Amato was also impressed with his defensive front during Saturday's practice. Tackle Martrel Brown tallied four sacks while linebacker Oliver Hoyte led the eam with eight tackles.

In addition to Holt, Blackman and Harris sitting out, John Dunlap (ACL) and Stephen Tulloch (shoulder) continue to rehab from surgery.

The Wolfpack will finish spring practice with the annual Red and White game next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Carter-Finley Stadium.
