The Deacons enjoyed cool and dry weather for the first time in several days

Practice No. 5: The skies cleared Saturday afternoon as the Deacons took the campus fields for the fifth practice of the 2004 preseason. Saturday marked the first day that Wake Forest wore pads, however practice drills still focused on fundamentals rather than full contact scrimmages.

What Head Coach Jim Grobe had to say:

Q: How has the team handled the unusually wet weather this week?
“Lucky for us, the new field turf really eliminated some of the problems that we used to have with rainy conditions. The field handles the water so well that it is still safe to conduct practice. They’ve toughed it out through the heavy rain this week pretty well, we only had to cut practice short one day and that was because of lightning.”

Q: Are you pleased with the first week of practice?
“I think it’s been a good first week. The guys are starting to show some signs of fatigue and soreness, but that’s expected. We know we’ve got a long way to go to be ready for the first game, but we also know that we don’t have to be ready after just the first week of preseason. Overall, I think we’re making good progress and I like what I’ve seen so far.”

Q: Your assessment of the first day in pads?
“Although this was the first day in pads, it was certainly not as full contact of a practice as it could have been or will be in the days to come. We’re still focusing on fundamentals and the basics. We’ll begin more of a scrimmage type practice in the next two or three days.”

On The Sideline: Joe Salsich returned to the field this afternoon. The Annapolis, Md. senior missed the earlier preseason practices from an injured foot. He appeared healthy Saturday afternoon. Josh Gattis sat out with a groin injury. Johnny Edwards joined him on the sideline with hamstring problems.

Upcoming Practice Schedule: The team begins two-a-days on Monday, with practices scheduled for 9:00 am and 3:30 pm, both on the Campus Fields.

Sunday, Aug. 15 3:30-6:30 pm (Campus Field)
Monday, Aug. 16 9:00-11:30 am (Campus Field) and 3:30-6:00 pm (Campus Field)
Tuesday, Aug. 17 3:30-6:30 pm (Campus Field)
