Durham, NC - Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe announced on Monday that redshirt junior defensive end Kenny Anunike will miss the remainder of the 2011 season after suffering torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee during Duke’s 48-27 win over Tulane this past Saturday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Kenny as he recovers from yet another unfortunate injury,” Cutcliffe said. “He was obviously off to an excellent start this season, and we’ll miss is production and leadership on the defensive front.”

Duke head team physician Dr. Claude “Tee” Moorman will handle surgical duties at a later date.

Despite missing over three quarters of action against the Green Wave, Anunike ranks tied for second in the ACC in quarterback sacks per game (1.00) and tied for fifth in the league in tackles for loss per contest (1.25). His season totals include 15 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, one caused fumble and one quarterback pressure.

A native of Galena, Ohio, Anunike logged 23 tackles in 12 games as a reserve defensive end in 2010. He played in all 12 games of the 2009 season, seeing action primarily on special teams as a reserve tight end. Anunike sat out the 2008 campaign after having knee surgery prior to the season.

The Blue Devils (2-2 overall, 1-0 ACC) travel to Miami, Fla., this weekend to meet Florida International on Saturday night. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised live on ESPNU.
