Durham, N.C. -- Headlined by 45 returning lettermen, Duke head football coach Ted Roof and his staff will welcome the entire Blue Devil team to campus on Sunday for the start of preseason camp. Duke opens practice on Monday evening, and kicks off the 2005 schedule on September 3 at East Carolina.

On defense, seven starters are back including All-ACC cornerback John Talley, who picked up 59 tackles and four interceptions last fall. The defensive line welcomes the return of senior end Phillip Alexander, who saw just two games of action in 2004 before suffering a season-ending leg injury in week two at Connecticut. Also back on the defensive side of the ball is linebacker Brendan Dewan, who finished second on the team with 84 tackles last year, and safety Brian Greene, who secured 59 total stops in 2004.

"Every year I'm excited about the season ahead," Greene said. "But there is something different about this year with the way we've worked in the weight room and the way the guys are talking about the season. Guys have always wanted to win in the past, but now we expect to win, and that is huge."

Offensively, the Blue Devils return seven starters from last year and will be under the direction of first-year offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien. Duke brings back starting quarterback Mike Schneider, who threw for 1,527 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore in 2004, along with seven of its top eight pass receivers and its three top rushers from a year ago.

Roof also announced that kicker Alex Feinberg will miss the 2005 season for personal reasons.

Duke will host its annual Meet the Blue Devils Day on Saturday, August 20 at 1:00 p.m. in the Yoh Football Center.
