Atlantic division team notes

Boston College
LB Mark Herzlich--tabbed to the preseason
watch list for the Lott Trophy--led
all Eagle tacklers with 13 hits, a tackle for
loss and a forced fumble against Georgia
Tech and ranks 4th in the ACC in tackles...
Another Flutie is fi nding his way into the
Boston College stat sheet...Billy Flutie, the nephew of the
Hall of Fame Eagle QB, is the starting punter this year for
BC, averaging 38.3 yards a punt...BC’s defense is ranked
10th nationally in pass defense and 18th in scoring defense
this week... PK Steve Aponavicius converted on three FGs
against Georgia Tech and is tied for 2nd in the ACC in threepointers...
LB Brian Toal once again performed double-duty,
making 7 tackles including a QB sack against Georgia Tech,
while also carrying the ball twice in short-yardage situations,
converting once for a fi rst down...Toal has been selected to
the watch lists for the Nagurski and Bednarik Awards.
When TB James Davis rushed for 107
yards on only 13 carries against the
Citadel, it was the 13th 100-yard rushing
game of his career...Davis moved into
22nd place on the ACC’s career rushing
list with 3,250 career rushing yards...
TB C. J. Spiller rushed for 75 yards and 3 TDs against The
Citadel...Spiller (1,788) and Davis have combined to rush
for over 5,000 career yards (5,038)...Spiller has 3 career KO
returns for scores including a 96-yarder in the season’s opener
against Alabama...FS Michael Hamlin, named to the preseason
watch list for the Nagurski and Jim Thorpe Awards, had
a career-high 3 interceptions against The Citadel and is tied
for 2nd place nationally in interceptions per game....Hamlin
also leads the ACC in tackling averaging 11.5 hits per game,
which places him tied for 11th nationally...WR Aaron Kelly
now has 172 catches for his career for 15th place on the ACC
career reception list.
Florida State
The Seminoles opened the year in impressive fashion, scoring 69 points against Western Carolina, the most points for an FSU football team in 13 seasons since scoring 72 against Wake Forest in 1995.
Sophomore QB Christian Ponder,
named the FSU starter last Wednesday, threw for 3 TDs and
combined with fellow soph QB D’Vontrey Richardson to
accumulate 360 yards of total offense and 6 TDs rushing and
passing...Ponder and true junior DB Myron Rolle, a Bednarik,
Nagurski, Lott and Thorpe Award nominee, have already
graduated in just two and a half years...WR Greg Carr‘s
54-yard TD reception against the Catamounts was the 26th
TD catch of his career, putting him all alone in 8th place on
the ACC career list...CB Tony Carter recorded the 5th TD
by return in his career with a 68-yard punt return or a score...
Carter, who has also returned a blocked kick for a defensive
conversion, has 3 interception returns for scores, but this is
his fi rst punt return for a TD...FSU played 22 true freshmen
against the Catamounts.
For the second straight week, sophomore
TB Da’Rel Scott topped the 100-yard
mark, rushing for 123 yards on just 11
carries against Middle Tennessee ...Scott,
who is averaging 8.7 yards a carry, leads
the ACC and is tied for 4th in the nation
in rushing averaging 160.0 per game...WR Darrius
Heyward-Bey, who was named to the pre-season watch list
for the Maxwell Trophy, had an 80-yard TD reception against
MTSU and ranks 3rd in the ACC in yards per game, while
also averaging 22.9 yards a catch....P Travis Baltz is averaging
42.9 yards per punt and is ranked 5th in the ACC...LBs
Alex Wujciak and Dave Philistin each lead the Terrapins in
tackling, averaging 7.5 hits per game... C Edwin Williams
was named to the watch list for the Rimington Award....Williams
has 28 starts in his career....DT Jeremy Navarre has
started in 38 games...With QB Jordan Steffy out with a thumb
injury, QB Chris Turner started against MTSU and threw
for 207 yards....Maryland’s opponent this week, 23rd-ranked
California features the nation’s 6th-ranked rushing attack.
NC State
With QB Harrison Beck leading the way
due to an injury to QB Russell Wilson, the
Wolfpack got into the win column, downing
William & Mary, 34-24, with Beck
throwing for 246 yards and 2 TDs...For
the second straight week, sophomore LB Nate Irving led the
Wolfpack in tackles and also had a pass interception...Irving,
who had a game-high 13 tackles against William & Mary,
also had his second pass interception, recovered a fumble
and had 1.5 tackles for loss....Irving is tied with Clemson’s
Michael Hamlin for the lead in the ACC in tackles, averaging
11.5 per game....State’s top three receivers Saturday--WRs
Owen Spencer and T.J. Graham and TE George Bryan--
combined for 13 catches and 201 yards. Before Saturday, they
had managed just 9 receptions for 110 yards in their careers...
TB Andre Brown has 1,916 career yards rushing and needs
just 84 more to become the 10th NC State player to top the
2,000-yard rushing mark...He needs just fi ve yards to move
into 10th place on the Wolfpack career list.
Wake Forest
For the second straight week QB Riley
Skinner completed better than 70 percent
of his passes, completing 32 of 43 for
267 yards and 2 TDs in leading Wake
to a 30-28 come-from-behind win over
Mississippi...Skinner has now completed
466 of 665 passes and is currently the most accurate passer
in ACC history, having compiled a career 70.1 completion
percentage...PK Sam Swank’s game-winning 41-yard fi eld
goal against Ole Miss was the 65th of his career, tying him
with Gary Cismesia of FSU for 7th place on the ACC career
list...His 12 points give him 309 for his career, good enough
for 9th place on the ACC career scoring list....Swank will be
honored this week as one of three “Lou Groza Award” kicking
stars of the week...Senior WR D.J. Boldin made 11 catches
against Mississippi for 123 yards and leads the ACC and is
4th nationally in pass receiving, averaging 9 catches a game
...The Deacons, under Jim Grobe, have posted a 22-7 record
the past two-plus seasons...Wake Forest’s fi ve-game winning
streak is tied with TCU for the nation’s 4th longest current
winning streak...Only BYU (12), Georgia (9) and Southern
California (6) have longer streaks.

Coastal division team notes

QB Thaddeus Lewis threw for 256 yards
in Duke’s 24-20 loss to Northwestern...
Lewis currently has thrown for 4,961
yards in his career and needs only 39 more
yards to become only the 7th Blue Devil to
top 5,000 career passing yards... Freshman WR Johnny Williams
caught 11 passes for 135 yards against Northwestern...
Williams ranks 2nd in the ACC in catches per game, averaging
6.5 a contest...TB Clifford Harris is 5th in the ACC in
rushing, averaging 90.5 yards a game...Duke’s defense limited
Northwestern’s offense to just 77 yards rushing... LBs Michael
Tauiliili and Vincent Rey each contributed a team-high eight
tackles.......Duke’s opponent this week, Navy, leads the nation
in rushing offense and has the nation’s leading rusher in
Shun White... P Kevin Jones is averaging 46.2 yards a punt
... Jones is 2nd in the ACC in punting average and ranks 8th
nationally...RB Re’quan Boyette, LB Vincent Rey, FB Tielor
Robinson and LB Michael Tauiliili have been elected team
captains for the Blue Devils this year.
Georgia Tech
New Head Coach Paul Johnson won
his fi rst Conference game as Tech head
coach, as the Jackets downed Boston College,
19-16...B-Back Jonathan Dwyer
rushed for 108 yards on 18 carries and a
TD...It was the third 100-yard effort of Dwyer’s career, and
second straight this year...Dwyer is 2nd in the ACC in rushing,
averaging 110 yards a game and 7.6 yards per play...He
also averaged 32.3 on three KO returns...He was named to the
pre-season watch list for the Doak Walker Award...DT Vance
Walker, who is on the watch lists for the Outland, Lombardi
and Bednarik awards, sacked BC QB Chris Crane for a 7-yard
loss and a two-point safety in the 4th quarter...He also had
two tackles for loss... DB Morgan Burnett had a team-high
10 tackles and a forced fumble as Tech’s defense held BC to
just 262 total yards... DE Michael Johnson was named to the
pre-season list for the Ted Hendricks Award.
North Carolina
WR-KR Brandon Tate, already the ACC’s
all-time leader in kickoff return yardage,
recorded the second-highest total of allpurpose
yardage in a single game in ACC
history with 397 yards against McNeese
State on Aug. 30...Tate just missed the
ACC all-time mark of 411 yards set in 1993 by John Leach
of Wake Forest against Maryland...Leach set the record with
51 plays, while Tate needed just 11 touches for his total...Tate
had an 82-yard punt return for a score, caught a 57-yard TD
pass, added a 56-yard kickoff and was UNC’s leading rusher
with 106 yards on only 3 carries on runs of 20, 32 and 54...
Tate now has six returns for scores, 3 each by punt and kickoff
return...WR Hakeem Nicks had 6 catches for 110 yards, the
6th 100-yard receiving game of his career....Sophomore LB
Quan Sturdivant led all tackles with 11 hits, while DE E.J.
Wilson had 8 tackles including 3 for loss...With 221 yards
passing Soph QB T.J. Yates has now thrown for 2,876 yards in
his career..Thursday night’s game with Rutgers will be UNC’s
sixth appearance on ESPN’s national Thursday night package...
The Tar Heels are 3-2 in their fi ve previous appearances.
Virginia sophomore QB Peter Lalich
made his second career start in UVa’s 16-0
win over Richmond...Lalich completed 21
of 39 passes for 204 yards, but also threw
two interceptions...WR Kevin Ogletree
had 8 receptions for 103 yards...CB Vic
Hall returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown... The
Cavaliers only return fi ve starters on defense, but three of them
are at linebacker where Antonio Appleby, Jon Copper and
Clint Sintim have started 95 games between them...Copper
and Sintim each had a QB sack against Richmond... Sintim,
who has started 39 games, was named to the pre-season watch
list for the Nagurski Award....UVa’s defense limited the Spiders
to just 194 total yards...TB Cedric Peerman, who had
60 yards rushing on just 10 carries against the Spiders, is an
ordained minister...Last July, he was ordained as a minister at
Charlottesville’s Mt Zion First African Church ...T Eugene
Monroe has been named to the pre-season watch list for the
prestigious Outland Trophy.

For the second straight week, Miami had a
freshman QB make his fi rst career start, as
redshirt freshman Robert Marve started at
5th-ranked Florida...One week before, true
freshman QB Jacory Harris made his fi rst
start against Charleston Southern...They
are the fi rst freshmen to start the season for UM at QB since
Bernie Kosar opened the 1983 campaign...Though the Hurricanes
lost to 5th-ranked Florida 26-3, they only trailed 9-3 at
the end of three quarters of play...The loss was the Hurricanes
fi rst to the Gators since 1985, snapping a string of six straight
UM wins...Freshman LB Sean Spence had fi ve tackles, one
QB sack and two tackles for loss... Miami’s’ defense ranks
21st nationally in total defense...The Hurricanes enjoy a bye
week this week before traveling to Texas A&M on Sept. 20...
DE Eric Moncur was named to the pre-season watch list
for the Hendricks Award, given to the nation’s top defensive
end...13 of Miami’s 23 senior players in 2008 have already
earned their degrees including returning starters Moncur, TE
Chris Zellner and DT Joe Joseph.
Virginia Tech
Sophomore QB Tyrod Taylor rushed for
112 yards and threw for 26 more in helping
lead Virginia Tech to a 24-7 win over
Furman..DB Stephan Virgil who picked
off an errant lateral pass and returned it
30 yards for a TD and also returned a
blocked PAT 90 yards for a two-point defensive conversion
in Tech’s season-opener against ECU, had an interception and
two tackles for loss in Tech’s win over Furman... .Senior DE
Orion Martin had a QB sack and three tackles for loss to
lead the Hokies’ defense...P Brent Bowden, who is averaging
43.9 yards a punt, ranks 4th in the ACC and 17th nationally
in punting...Junior G Sergio Render has been named to the
pre-season watch list for the Outland Trophy...The Hokies are
one of only 3 teams nationally (USC, Texas) to have won 10
or more games in each of the past four seasons...Since 1995,
only Ohio State (131) and Florida (128) have won more games
than has Tech (126)...The winner of the Virginia Tech-Georgia
Tech game has played in the ACC’s Championship Game in
each of the past three years.
