Atlantic Coast Conference announces ACC Football Players of the Week for October 8

Two Tar Heels pace weekly honorees.

OFFENSIVE BACK–Matt Ryan, Boston College, Quarterback, 6-5, 220, Sr, Exton, Pa.
Ryan completed 24-of-32 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns in Boston College’s 52-24 win over Bowling Green on Saturday. His 71-yard touchdown pass to Justin Jarvis in the third quarter was the longest of the season and the longest touchdown pass of his career. Ryan, who is beginning to emerge as a serious Heisman candidate, has now thrown for 15 touchdowns and 1,857 yards for the year, placing him at the top of the league in both categories.

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN–Garrett Reynolds, North Carolina, Tackle, 6-7, 295, Jr., Knoxville, Tenn.
In North Carolina’s 33-27 win over Miami on Saturday, Reynolds recorded eight knockdown blocks as the Tar Heels piled up 186 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Against a Miami defense which was tops in the league overall and second in sacks, Reynolds and the UNC offensive line led the Tar Heels to more than 400 yards of offense and allowed only two quarterback sacks. Reynolds’ performance was graded at 90 percent by the Tar Heel coaches.

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN–Dave Philistin, Maryland, Linebacker, 6-2, 231, Jr., Manchester, N.H.
Philistin, an inside linebacker for the Terrapin defense, registered a career-high 21 tackles in Maryland’s 28-26 win over Georgia Tech on Saturday. His stop of Tashard Choice on a Yellow Jacket two-point conversion attempt late in the game denied Georgia Tech’s opportunity to tie and preserved the Maryland win. Philistin’s 21 tackles are the third-most in a NCAA FBS game this season, and the most by any Maryland player since 1998. Philistin now ranks sixth in the ACC in tackles per game (9.3).

DEFENSIVE BACK–Jamie Silva, Boston College, Safety, 5-11, 210, Sr., East Providence, R.I.
In the Eagles’ 52-24 rout of Bowling Green on Saturday, Silva tied a Boston College single-game record with three interceptions, one of which he returned 65 yards for the first touchdown of his career. He also accumulated six tackles, including five solo ones, on the day to lead the BC defense. Silva now leads the conference with five interceptions this season, and has totaled 11 in his career at Boston College.

SPECIALIST–Connor Barth, North Carolina, Place kicker, 6-1, 190, Sr., Wilmington, N.C.
Against the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, Barth made four field goals for the first time in his career to extend his school record for most consecutive made field goals to 19. In the 33-27 win, he connected from 33, 51, 35 and 20 yards to boost a Tar Heel special teams unit that made several big plays on the day. Barth’s 51-yarder in the first quarter was the fourth of 50 or more yards in his career. A perfect 8-for-8 in 2007, Barth is currently tied atop the ACC standings for field goal percentage.

ROOKIE–Tyrod Taylor, Virginia Tech, Quarterback, 6-1, 206, Fr., Hampton, Va.
In Saturday’s 41-23 win at Clemson, Taylor accounted for 183 yards of total offense. He rang up 118 yards on the ground, including a 52-yarder late in the game to seal the win, along with 65 through the air. Taylor threw for one touchdown and no interceptions in while guiding Virginia Tech’s offense to a mistake-free performance.
