2005 NFL Draft

An ACC record 36 players were selected in the 2005 NFL Draft, surpassing the previous record of 32 set in 1957. Florida State led all schools with nine overall selections and two first round picks. Antrel Rolle of Miami was the first ACC player chosen in the 2005 draft selected by Arizona with the eighth overall pick. A Virginia school record seven athletes were selected in 2005. With the 12th overall pick, Maryland’s Shawne Merriman became the first Terrapin player to be drafted in the first round since 1997, when Pittsburgh selected Chad Scott.

Noting the Draft
The ACC has had at least one first round selection in 16 straight NFL drafts and in 26 of the last 28 ... the ACC had an all-time high eight first round selections in 1997.

Since joining the ACC in 1992, Florida State leads all ACC teams with 20 first round selections ... the Seminoles have had at least one first round selection in eight of the past 12 years ... North Carolina is second with eight first round selections, followed by Virginia (6), Clemson (6), NC State (4), Georgia Tech (2), Maryland (2) and Duke, Miami and Wake Forest with one apiece.

Of the 51 defensive backs taken in the 2005 NFL Draft, the ACC led all conferences (19.6%) with 10 selections. All 10 of those selections were among the first 38 DBs taken in the first five rounds of the draft.

The ACC’s five first round selections in the 2005 NFL Draft were the most since 1998 when the ACC had seven athletes chosen in the first round. The five draftees included three defensive and two offensive players. The conference record for most first round picks is eight established back in 1997.
