NCSU men's golf to host Intercollegiate at MacGregor Downs

The NC State men's golf team will be the host school for the COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT INTERCOLLEGIATE at MacGregor Downs, April 8-10, 2004. The event, to be played over MacGregor Downs Country Club's 6,867-yard, par-72 layout, will include a College-Am tournament on Thursday, April 8 and a 54-hole 15-team intercollegiate tournament Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10.

MacGregor Downs Country Club has been the site of previous intercollegiate tournaments hosted by the Wolfpack. The course was also the site of two PGA Tour events in the early 1970s.

"We are thrilled to be invited back to play MacGregor Downs," said Wolfpack golf coach Richard Sykes. "We love to play MacGregor. Without a doubt it's one of the better courses we'll play this spring. And, the teams coming are thrilled as well. It's a great test of golf and we always appreciate the hospitality at MacGregor Downs.

"And, we are excited about the involvement of the Courtyard by Marriott in Cary. That's where the teams will be staying for three days and we very mush appreciate the Courtyard's support of the tournament," said Sykes.

Five ACC schools are among the field and the tournament also showcases nine of the top-40 teams nationally according to Golfweek magazine.

The tournament will feature All-America caliber individuals, including top-ranked Bill Haas from Wake Forest, Georgia Southern's Aron Price, who is ranked third and No. 4 Justin Smith from Minnesota. Overall, the tournament will spotlight eight of the top-50 ranked players.

A rich history of talent-laden competition at the Intercollegiate includes the likes of Chris DiMarco, Dudley Hart, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Moore, Warren Schutte, Tim Herron, Brian Gay, Stewart Cink, Edward Fryatt, Chris Riley, Trip Kuehne, Ted Purdy, Brad Elder, Tim Clark, Chad Campbell, Paul Casey, J.J. Henry, Matt Kuchar, James McLean, Rory Sabbatini, Kyle Thmpson, Steve Scott, Charles Howell, Jonathan Byrd, Will Collins, Ricky Barnes, Martin Maritz, Jeremy Anderson, Lucas Glover, Carl Pettersson, Jamie Elson and many others over the 14 years of the tournament.

The College-Am tournament offers amateur golfers the opportunity to compete along side many of the top college golf players. Teams of four amateurs will join one college golfer in a modified captain's choice best ball event the afternoon of Thursday, April 8. While the college golfer plays his own ball the entire round, the four amateurs will all hit tee shots and then select the best of the five and play individual balls into the hole. Using handicaps, the two best scores of the five will be used as the team score. Lunch will be provided by Bear Rock Foods at the College-Am and Danny's Bar-B-Que will sponsor dinner.

"We are encouraging―make that soliciting―alumni of each of the schools represented to compete in the College-Am," says MacGregor Downs golf chairman Jim Pomeranz, coordinator of the event. "We'll have 30 teams entered with two players from each school each heading a fivesome. While this is definitely an NC State event, we want fans of all the schools to take part."

On Friday, the 15 teams will play two 18-hole rounds, utilizing shotgun starts in the morning and afternoon. Saturday morning's 18-hole final will be conducted with tee times from the 1st and 10th holes. There is no admission to attend and watch the tournament.

1:00 pm Intercollegiate Tournament second round, shotgun start

Saturday, April 10:
8:00 am * 10:00 am Intercollegiate Tournament third round, tee times on 1st and 10th tees
2:00 pm * 3:00 pm Awards Ceremony
