Duke field hockey team ranked fourth in first poll[Sep. 13, 2005] The Duke field hockey team is ranked fourth in the first 2005 STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, released by the coaches association Tuesday. The Blue Devils are 4-1 in the 2005 campaign, having won each of their first two tournaments -- Louisville’s Champion’s Tournament and Delaware’s Blue Hen Classic -- and suffering their first loss last weekend.
Duke field hockey team tops NCAA scoring, margin of victory[Sep. 13, 2005] The fourth-ranked Duke field hockey team sits at the top of NCAA Division I teams in both scoring offense and margin of victory as of Tuesday. The Blue Devils (4-1) have scored an average of 5.4 goals per game and have defeated their opponents by a 4.11 margin of victory.
History of the Atlantic Coast Conference[Aug. 10, 2005] The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members - Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name became officially the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Atlantic Coast Conference announces 2004-05 Academic Honor Roll[Aug. 9, 2005] The 49th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll, noting academic excellence by student-athletes for the 2004-05 school year, was released today. Duke led the conference in total selections for the 17th consecutive year placing 376 student-athletes on the list. North Carolina was second with 294, while Maryland was third with 252. Virginia tallied 232 student-athletes, followed by Clemson (204), NC State (183), Florida State (168), Virginia Tech (156), Wake Forest (130), Miami (126) and Georgia Tech (115).
Wake Forest presents 2005 Fan Fest[Jul. 25, 2005] The Wake Forest Sports Marketing Department presents Fan Fest 2005, an event at Groves Stadium on Friday, August 12 at 7:00 p.m., to promote awareness about its upcoming fall sport season.
Schrader joins Elon men's golf team[Jul. 16, 2005] Elon University men’s golf coach Bill Morningstar has announced the addition of Casey Schrader (West Palm Beach, Fla. / Atlantic Community H.S.) to his 2005-06 team roster. Schrader joins Phoenix fall signee Cameron Cheek (Siler City, N.C. / Jordan Matthews).
Duke athletics announces staff promotion & additions[Jul. 13, 2005] Duke director of athletics Joe Alleva announced on Wednesday the promotion of Jamie Pootrakul to Director of Compliance along with seven additions to the department's staff. Additions to the Duke Athletic staff include Ben Blevins (Sports Information Staff Assistant), Kim Conrad (Sports Information Staff Assistant), John Holinka (Sports Information Staff Assistant), Ryan Murphy (Iron Dukes Intern), Michael Ryan (Assistant Director of Facilities & Game Operations), Gina Rosser (Business & Facilities Staff Assistant) and Jason Sholtz (Internet Operations Staff Assistant).
UNC offers Olympic sports pass[Jul. 10, 2005] The UNC Department of Athletics is offering fans the Olympic Sports Pass, which will grant admission to all men's soccer, women's soccer, women's basketball, men's lacrosse, and baseball regular season contests during the 2005-2006 academic year. The price of the pass is $200 for adults and $100 for students or senior citizens.
Mountaineers take a pair from Aggies[Apr. 14, 2005] Boone, N.C. — Senior Jennifer Hurley (Asheboro, N.C.) pitched her way to a 5-3 complete-game victory and sophomore Keri Blackwelder (Stanfield, N.C.) registered a 4-2 complete-game victory as Appalachian State University softball completed a sweep of North Carolina A&T in a Thursday afternoon twinbill held at the Watauga County Complex. Sophomore Kristyn Hurt (Siler City, N.C.) put the Mountaineers on the board with a two-out RBI triple to give the Mountaineers an early.
O’Connor earns first career win in 2-0 shutout of Coastal Carolina[Feb. 20, 2005] Conway, S.C. – Freshman hurler Meredith O’Connor (Charlotte, N.C.) struck out 10 batters while throwing seven shutout innings in Appalachian State University’s 2-0 victory over host Coastal Carolina University in the final game of the Coastal Softball Triple Play Weekend. Sophomore designated player Kristyn Hurt (Siler City, N.C.) added an insurance run in the sixth inning with a solo home run to left center.
Appalachian State Softball upended twice at Coastal Tournament[Feb. 19, 2005] Conway, S.C. - Appalachian State softball dropped two games Saturday in the first day of the Coastal Carolina tournament. The Mountaineers fell to the host Chanticleers, 2-1, and to St. John's, 7-1. The setbacks push ASU to 3-9 on the season. Appalachian picked up a single run in the bottom of the second when Kristyn Hurt (Siler City, N.C.), but the Mountaineers could get no more.
Appalachian softball picked seventh in SoCon; Hurt named All-Conference[Feb. 5, 2005] Boone, N.C. – Appalachian State University softball was picked to finish seventh in the Southern Conference this season, according to a poll of the league’s coaches. The coaches also selected Appalachian sophomore Kristyn Hurt of Siler City, N.C. as the first-team designated player on the league’s preseason all-conference squad.
Elon University signs four for men's golf[Dec. 8, 2004] ELON, N.C. -- Elon University men's golf coach Bill Morningstar today announced the signings of four golfers to National Letters of Intent for the 2005-06 school year. Joining the Phoenix next fall will be Cameron Cheek (Siler City, N.C./Jordan Matthews), Christopher Farnsworth (Signal Mountain, Tenn./The Baylor School), Jayson Judy (Gibsonville, N.C./Alamance Christian) and Christopher Wirt (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry).
ACC Unveils Future League Seal, Divisional Names[Oct. 18, 2004] Greensboro, N.C. - The institutions of the Atlantic Coast Conference unveiled the future 12-member Atlantic Coast Conference seal and divisional names that will take effect July 1, 2005, as announced by Commissioner John Swofford.
