Duke's First Varsity Eight Crew has impressive showing at Longhorn Invitational

DURHAM, NC Duke’s First Varsity Eight crew had an impressive showing over the weekend at the sixth-annual Longhorn Invitational held on Town Lake in Austin, Texas. The crew of Sarah Shapiro (coxswain), Tonia Boock, Lia Hart, Virginia Kane, Alissa Van Arnam, Emily Herrington, Caroline Wray, Krista Harryman and Emma Darling took three-of-four races, posting wins against Kansas State, Iowa and Texas.

On the first day of competition, the Blue Devils dropped two-of-three races to Kansas State. The Wildcats defeated Duke in the First Novice Eights race with a time of 7:07.87 before winning the Second Varsity Eights race with a time of 6:57.41. The Blue Devils then took first in the First Varsity Eights race with a time of 6:46.91.

On day two, Duke lost all three morning races against Wisconsin before dropping two-of-three races to Iowa in the afternoon session. The Badgers swept the first two races with a 6:49.80 time in the First Novice Eights race and a 6:46.10 time in the Second Varsity Eights race. In the First Varsity Eights race, the No. 8 Wisconsin crew edged the Duke crew with a 6:38.20 time compared to the Blue Devils’ 6:39.60 time.

In the afternoon session, Iowa claimed first in the First Novice Eights race with a time of 7:21.20 and first in the Second Varsity Eights race with a time of 7:02.60. Duke’s First Varsity Eight crew capped the day by winning the final race with a time of 6:40.60.

On Sunday, host Texas took two-of-three races from Duke to close out the Longhorn Invitational. The Longhorns won the First Novice Eights race with a time of 7:31.00 before winning the Second Varsity Eights race with a time of 7:30.00. Duke’s First Varsity Eight crew finished the day by edging the Longhorns with a time of 6:42.00 compared to Texas’ 6:42.20 mark.

The Duke rowing team will next compete at the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, April 1.
