Conway, S.C. - Appalachian State softball dropped two games Saturday in the first day of the Coastal Carolina tournament. The Mountaineers fell to the host Chanticleers, 2-1, and to St. John's, 7-1. The setbacks push ASU to 3-9 on the season.

In game one, Coastal jumped out to a 1-0 lead. But the Mountaineers evened it up in the top of the sixth, as Mary Lutz (Brentwood, Tenn.) doubled down the left field line with one down and Natalie Willis (Cherryville, N.C.) drove her in with a single to center field. However, the threat ended there, as CCU pitcher Brittany Nelson got the next two Appalachian batters out to keep the game tied at one.

Coastal manufactured the game winner in the bottom of the seventh. Allen singled down the left field line. Cantrell got another walk and Hostetler loaded the bases with a single to left center. After an infield fly out made it two away, Jennifer Hurley's (Asheboro, N.C.) delivery sailed over the catcher's head and Allen scampered home with the game winner.

Nelson moved to 3-1 on the year, as she gave up just three hits, while striking out seven and walking one. Hurley (0-4) got the loss after striking out 10 but giving up six hits and three walks.

In ASU's second contest of the day, the Red Storm provided themselves with all the runs they needed in the top of the first, as they put up four runs, highlighted by Christina Tucker's three-run home run.

Loren Anguiano added to the lead in the top of the second inning, as she followed a leadoff double by Brittany Crouch with a home run over the left center field fence for a 6-0 lead.

Appalachian picked up a single run in the bottom of the second when Kristyn Hurt (Siler City, N.C.), but the Mountaineers could get no more.

St. John's tacked on another tally in the third inning to claim the 7-1 win.

Meredith O'Conner (Charlotte, N.C.) picked up the loss to drop to 0-4 on the season.

Appalachian returns to the diamond tomorrow with a noon battle with St. John's and a 4 p.m. contest against Coastal Carolina.
