Conway, S.C. – Freshman hurler Meredith O’Connor (Charlotte, N.C.) struck out 10 batters while throwing seven shutout innings in Appalachian State University’s 2-0 victory over host Coastal Carolina University in the final game of the Coastal Softball Triple Play Weekend. Appalachian fell to St. John’s, 2-1 in eight innings, in Sunday’s first contest.

Senior Sarah Gough (Yadkinville, N.C.) laced a one-out triple down the right field line in the top of the fourth inning to begin ASU’s first scoring threat. With two outs in the inning, Kasey Motsinger (Yadkinville, N.C.) doubled to right center to score Gough and give O’Connor all the run support she would need.

Sophomore designated player Kristyn Hurt (Siler City, N.C.) added an insurance run in the sixth inning with a solo home run to left center. The blast was Hurt’s first of the season.

O’Connor worked all seven innings while picking up a career-high 10 strikeouts and earning Appalachian’s first shutout of the season.

Gough went 2-for-3 from the plate on the afternoon to lead the Mountaineers.

In the day’s first game, Appalachian State was able to put across a run in the top of the first, as Hurt drove a two-out RBI single up the middle, scoring Natalie Willis (Cherryville, N.C.).

The Red Storm evened the score at one in the bottom of the second. Christina Tucker led off the inning with a double off the center field wall and would score later in the inning on a two-out RBI single to right field by classmate Loren Anguiano.

Following the International tiebreaker rule, Appalachian State placed Lindsay Glover (Greensboro, N.C.) on second to begin the top of the eighth. After she was sacrificed to third, Hurt hit a ground ball to Hill at second, who started the inning ending double play, as she went to first and senior Allina Sainz threw home to nail Glover as Tucker blocked her from the plate.

In the bottom of the inning, the Red Storm took the game on a sacrifice fly by Tucker. Hill began the inning at second and was moved to third on a bunt single by junior Jo Sherlock. Tucker followed by lifting a ball down the right field line for the win.

Appalachian (4-10) returns to the coast next weekend to take part in the Seahawk Classic in Wilmington, N.C., beginning with a 10 a.m. match-up with host UNC Wilmington on Friday.
