Timberwolves Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale announced Monday that the team has signed first-round draft pick Rashad McCants to a contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed. All first-round rookie contracts are two years with separate club options for the third and fourth years.

"We’re excited to have Rashad signed, and have him participate in this week’s mini-camp and summer league,” said new Timberwolves head coach Dwane Casey. “I’m really looking forward to coaching him and having him join our team.”

Minnesota selected McCants, a 6-4, 207-pound guard from North Carolina, with the 14th overall selection in the first round of the 2005 NBA Draft. The 20-year-old McCants was an early entry candidate for the draft after spending three seasons at North Carolina (2002-03 - 2004-05). He averaged 17.6 ppg (.486 FG%), 4.1 rpg and 2.1 apg in 98 career games.

McCants ranks 14th all-time at Chapel Hill with 1,721 career points and tied for second with 221 career three-point field goals made. He was named to the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team and Syracuse Regional All-Tournament Team after helping lead the Tar Heels to the NCAA title this spring.

Latrell Sprewell is a free agent and not expected to be re-signed by the Timberwolves. Fred Hoiberg has a heart condition requiring surgery that may shorten or end his career. McCants will have to fill the offensive void.

McCants was the fourth North Carolina player selected in the first round, following Marvin Williams (second to Atlanta), Ray Felton (fifth to Charlotte) and Sean May (13th to Charlotte).
