Northwood baseball defeats NCSSM, 13-3

Pittsboro, NC - The Northwood varsity baseball team defeated the North Carolina School of Science and Math 13-3 in six innings Tuesday night at Northwood. After trailing 3-0 after one inning, the Charger bats slowly awakened throughout the rest of the game, led by Zach Groves who went 2 for 2 at the plate with a two run home run in the second inning to go along with his first inning single, three runs, and two stolen bases. Groves reached base every time he came to the plate in the game. Sophomore Dylan Davis earned the win on the mound as he pitched 5 and 2/3s strong innings yielding three runs, four hits, and striking out four.

The Chargers broke the game open in the 5th inning scoring four runs on RBI singles from Clay Martin and Matt Wade. The Chargers finished the Unicorns off in the sixth after senior Jake Houck led the inning off with a single, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Austin Brice. Senior Cameron Goodwin also contributed an RBI single and ended the game with an RBI ground out that scored the thirteenth run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
