Pittsboro, NC - "I was raised by a single mother who taught me about hope and hard work..When she left my stepfather because of abuse we had to live in a special residence for women and children while she searched for work. But we made it. I won a full scholarship to college, where I learned about courageous citizens who worked together for social change. That led to my doctoral
degree in political science and my encounters with women at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder who were transformed by their involvement in grassroots democracy. I have spent my life exploring the power of political involvement. Now I teach at UNC-Chapel Hill and work to empower others through local politics.

My mother believed in the democratic process and voted in every election. She died while I was in graduate school, but I know she would be proud of my campaign to apply what I've learned about politics, hard work and hope to the complex challenges facing our town.

Pittsboro is at a critical crossroads. We don't have to accept sprawl, traffic, pollution and whatever else outside forces bring our way. We can shape our destiny by supporting sound economic development with green and high-tech industry, good jobs, diverse housing, locally owned businesses, a walkable downtown, arts and youth programs, and small farms. Let's work together to choose what's best for our community. Whatever we do, let's ensure that all voices are heard, including newcomers and natives from all walks of life."

--Michele Berger, Candidate for Pittsboro Town Board.

As evidenced by this short bio, Michele Berger's life has been one of extraordinary challenges and accomplishments...and she's interested in more of the same on behalf of the town and people of Pittsboro. A creative problem-solver, a team player and clear communicator, Berger cares deeply about justice which is why she was able to secure a new election when it was discovered that Pittsboro voters' rights were diminished or denied by irregularities caused by errors on the part of the Board of Elections.

Pittsboro has the potential to become a vibrant community where everyone prospers. But we face unprecedented growth and economic pressures and we need -- make that, deserve -- safe drinking water. It's a big job but because of the qualities Michele possesses, she's received strong endorsements from local and county officials who want to work with her to find regional solutions to these problems. For all these reasons, I think Michele Berger would make a terrific Pittsboro Town Board Commissioner. Vote
for Michele Berger.
