Bynum, NC - The News and Observer newspaper lists Pittsboro as one of the only municipalities in the region not requiring mandatory water conservation use in the midst of what is now an extreme drought.
Pittsboro pulls its water from the Haw River at the old mill dam impoundment above Bynum. The river is very low, and many of the local creeks that feed the river are almost completely dry. The Town of Pittsboro sells treated water to areas outside their city limits, including the big Chapel Ridge Golf Course development off of Old Graham Road.
I traveled through Chapel Ridge on a detour route twice last week when a bridge on Old Graham Road was closed (to put in utilities to service even more developments underway) I was appalled to see green lawns being watered by sprinkler systems - with some of the water sprayed right on the street. What is the source of that water? It is too precious to waste on keeping lawns green in the midst of one of the worst droughts seen in a long time.
Please Pittsboro - enact mandatory water conservation measures now.
