Make developers build schools

Pittsboro, NC - I feel that growth in Chathem County is inevitable as more and more people discover how wonderful it is to live here, but there are ways to have growth and limit the detrimental impact on the area. Hopefully, our new commissioners will closely examine any new development plans and act in the best interest of the entire community.

As for the massive amounts of development already approved and for future planning, I propose that Chatham County consider initiating what areas in Florida, California and other states have implemented to aid in the control of growth and minimize the impact on the community and its existing tax structure.

In these areas, it's the developer who is responsible for actually building the schools that his development will spur the need for. That is, not just giving a portion of the profit made from the job to pacify the community, but building the physical structures that will house the students who will live in all the homes the project produces. The schools are required to be completed before the housing project is allowed to begin, before the first bulldozer moves in.

This does limit the amount of developments because many large developers, who move in to an area, build their 1000s of homes then move on to the next project with not a single lingering care as to how the community will cope with and handle the large influx of new residents and their needs, will not agree to such a requirement.

I thought I would throw that out as it has really helped many lovely communities hold on to what makes them lovely without barring all progress!
