Pittsboro, NC - Chatham County Deputies responded to a suspicious activity call in the vicinity of Cole Park Plaza and possibly prevented an armed robbery about to occur. When deputies arrived, the store clerk of ‘A Cleaner World’ Dry Cleaning business advised they saw an individual outside the business that fit the description of a person that robbed their store a month ago.

Deputies advised the clerk to secure the store and they began a meticulous search of the suspect. Deputies knew that there were two other robberies at this location since November and also had information that a black vehicle was involved. When searching the area for the suspect, they located a black 2011 Chevrolet Cruze with a white male driving. They searched the vehicle and discovered a black air pistol, a pill bottle of marijuana, a bowie knife, a camouflage bandana, and black gloves.

The subject, identified as David Allen Scott, 21, of 197 Wilson Court, New Hill advised the backpack and contents were a friend of his and he was going to pick him up at a local store. Deputies called the friend, later identified as Joseph Stiffler, 22, of 278 Hill Creek Blvd, Chapel Hill, and he advised the officers that he was in the business, ‘A Cleaner World’.

Deputies immediately responded back to the business and continued their investigation of Stiffler. He was taken into custody along with David Scott and both later gave information of their intention to rob the business and also implicated themselves in the previous two robberies.

Scott was arrested for two counts of Felonious Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, 3 counts of Conspiracy to Commit Robbery, Possession of Stolen Property, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was jailed under a $110,000.00 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on May 20.

Stiffler was arrested for 2 counts of Felonious Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, 3 counts of Conspiracy to Commit Robbery, 2 counts of Assault by Pointing a Gun, and 2 counts of Communicating Threats. He was jailed under a $125,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on May 20.
