Moncure, NC - Around 2:00 am, Saturday morning, Chatham County Deputies responded to 460 North Drive in Moncure in reference to an assault that had occurred at that location. When officers arrived on scene, they found Michael Lynn Lankford, a 50-year-old white male that lived at the same address deceased with multiple stab wounds. The victim was pronounced dead on scene by EMS workers and transported to UNC Hospital Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy.

Daniel Reynolds

Deputies found the suspect, Daniel Reynolds, 45, also of 460 North Drive, Moncure at the residence and immediately placed in custody. Detectives responded and found that the two lived together with 2 teenaged children and after an argument, Reynolds apparently stabbed the victim multiple times in the chest. The knife that was used was found on the suspect and taken as evidence.

Lankford had lived with Reynolds, a widower, and his two daughters for for several years, Maj. Gary Blankenship said.

The night of the stabbing, investigators think, Lankford had an argument with one of the daughters about her grades, Blankenship said.

Reynolds was arrested without incident and charged by detectives with Second Degree Murder. The children have been placed with relatives of the suspect. Reynolds was jailed with no bond and his court date is in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on October 4.
