Clarence Shinault

Pittsboro, NC - Clarence Shinault, 39, and Christopher McGhee, 41, both of 3200 Lystra Road, Chapel Hill, were taken into custody Tuesday by Chatham County deputies for three separate crimes of fraud, possession of stolen goods and interfering with a utility meter.

The arrest was based upon a two-week long investigation conducted by the county Sheriff's Office. Detectives have been working several larcenies from the North Chatham Elementary School on Lystra Road for the past several months and believe all are connected.

Detectives found McGhee and Shinault in possession of an electric meter that was reported stolen from the school on June 6. They had obtained electrical service from Progress Energy without permission, a report said.

Both men also were charged with felonious obtaining property by false pretenses, possession of stolen property and interfering with a utility meter. Detectives are currently trying to connect other crimes to the suspects.

Shinault was jailed under a $1,000 secured bond and McGhee was jailed under a $2,000 secured bond. Both are scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on June 29.
