Apex, NC - The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Fire Marshal’s Office in the investigation of a house fire that occurred at 1232 Luther Road, Apex (Chatham County) on Thursday morning, January 15.

Chatham County local fire departments were dispatched at 0200 hrs after a motorist drove by and saw the home fully involved in flames. Around 0600 hrs, fire officials found adult human remains inside the residence and contacted Sheriff’s investigators.

Deputies are attempting to identify the body and assist in the determination of the cause of the fire. SBI fire investigators were called in to assist as well. Evidence has been collected from the scene and sent to the SBI lab in Raleigh for analysis.

It is unclear at this time if the fire was intentionally set or caused by accident. The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the name of the homeowner until positive identification can be made; however, the homeowner's next of kin has been notified of the incident and provided details of what investigators know up to this point.

The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Chapel Hill.
