Carthage, NC - An off-duty Chatham County sheriff's deputy was killed early Wednesday in a single-vehicle accident.

Deputy Aaron Gabriel Whitaker, 24, of N.C. Highway 42 in Carbonton, was off-duty when he was involved in an accident in Moore County at about 2:45 a.m.

The wreck occurred on Glendon-Carthage Road, about 3.5 miles from Carthage. Whitaker was thrown from his Ford F-150 after swerving and hitting a power pole.

Whitaker, who lived in Moore County, had been employed with the Moore County Sheriff's Office for about three years before joining the Chatham County Sheriff's Office two months ago.

Major Gary Blankenship of the Chatham county sheriff's office said the accident involved no other vehicles. Though he was off duty, Whitaker did work four hours Tuesday afternoon.
