Pittsboro, NC - A two year investigation involving numerous law enforcement agencies in and around Chatham County has netted ten arrests of local residents. In 2012, the General Assembly enacted a law requiring people who possess and intend to transport more than 25 pounds of copper material to get a transportation permit from the local Sheriff and produce the permit at the business making the transaction. This would enable authorities to track those personnel who are selling copper, much of which is stolen.

Investigators received information that Hayes Iron and Metal of Siler City was receiving copper without requiring the permit and many people in and around Chatham County were cashing in on this illegal activity.

Last Wednesday, Chatham County Deputies, with the assistance of NC Department of Motor Vehicles, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Siler City Police Department and a host of other State and Federal agencies, arrested the following people with numerous charges.
