Rashad Edwards, 25, of 1545 US 15-501 South, Chapel Hill was arrested by Chatham County Sheriff’s Detectives on Tuesday after a lengthy surveillance operation resulted in a vehicle and foot chase on April 23.

Plain clothes officers from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office have been involved in an undercover surveillance mission in the North Chatham area of the county for several weeks after numerous reports have came in to the Office pertaining to breaking and enterings to homes under construction in developments throughout the North Chatham area.

On Friday April 23, deputies observed a green Ford Pickup truck drive through the Strowd Mountain subdivision, stop at a home and remove numerous items of buildings materials and putting them into the truck. The officer called for backup and when deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to stop and a 3 mile pursuit ensued. During the chase, items were falling out the back of the truck which caused deputies to slowdown, increasing the distance between the vehicles. The pursuit ended at the intersection of Poythress Road and Gilmore Road when the vehicle ran off the road and into a ditch. The two subjects jumped and ran from the vehicle. Officers gave chase but were unable to capture the suspects at that time. The truck was impounded and detectives were called in to continue the investigation.

Investigators discovered that the vehicle belonged to an elderly lady on Old Lystra Road and adjacent to her home was a house under construction. Officers were able to identify several items of stolen property at the house and obtained a search warrant for it. Officers recovered approximately $25,000.00 in stolen property and arrested Edwards for 6 counts of Felonious Possession of Stolen Property. He was jailed under a $10,000.00 secured bond.
