Pittsboro, NC - Two Chatham County cemeteries have been vandalized last week and investigators feel the two are connected.

On Friday, a representative of Mt. Pleasant Church off of 269 Mann’s Chapel Road, Pittsboro reported to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office that 78 head stones of graves were pushed over or broken. Vandals also broke two windows of the church. No one is sure when the incident took place, but was probably within the week.

On Monday, a representative of Lystra Baptist Church, of 686 Lystra Road, Chapel Hill reported 149 Cemetery head stones were damaged at their cemetery. Lystra Baptist Church is approximately 5 miles from Mt. Pleasant. It is believed that the suspects vandalized these stones the night before. Damage to both cemeteries was more than $20,000.00. There are no suspects in the case but investigators are working both.

If anyone has information on either case, they can call the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office at 919 542-2811 or Chatham County Crime Stoppers at 919 542-6116.
