The body of a man believed to be Brian Keith Marshall was located in a wooded area off the US 64 bypass in Pittsboro today around 4:00 PM. The body was located in a vehicle that Marshall was driving after he allegedly killed Richard Eugene Kelly and critically injuring his wife Melody. Marshall was wanted by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office for the shootings and they have been searching for him since the incident occurred on October 27.

The body was found by members of a grass cutting crew north of Pittsboro when one of the men noticed the top of a vehicle as he mowed the embankment on the south side of US 64. The vehicle could not be seen from the roadway. When he walked through the woods towards the vehicle, he observed the body of a man inside and notified authorities. Chatham County Sheriff’s Deputies and the State Highway Patrol were notified and began their investigations.

The vehicle, a white 1991 Honda CRX was registered to Marshall’s wife and was positively identified at the scene. A 410 shotgun was found inside and is believed to be the same weapon used in the shootings. Investigators believe that the body has been deceased for several weeks and will wait for a positive identification with dental records from the State Medical Examiners Office in Chapel Hill. The case is being investigated as an accident but investigators have not ruled out the possibility that Marshall may have shot himself while driving and the vehicle leaving the roadway was a result of that occurrence.

Investigators have questioned family members on the whereabouts of Marshall and no one has heard from him since before the shootings. Marshall’s cell phone and credit cards have not been used since he was last seen. Marshall’s next of kin have been notified and provided appropriate information concerning these facts.
