Pittsboro, NC - Nearly 300 residents of Chatham County are publicly lending their support in strict opposition to the November 6 county referendum on a proposed real estate transfer tax.
The Chatham County Coalition For Homeownership, a grassroots referendum committee formed for the purpose of defeating the
measure on the November 6th ballot, provided a list of names of county residents today.
“We’re pleased that so many citizens of Chatham County have joined forces to defeat this unfair and ill-conceived tax scheme,” said Heather Johnson, a spokesperson for the referendum committee. “These citizens represent a broad cross-section of our county. They all believe that the real estate transfer tax would be a tax on home equity and an unreliable revenue source for local government.”
Johnson added that this proposed tax would be paid for by the seller and that it would never go away. “This would be a permanent tax,” she said. “It would further drive up the cost of housing in our community, and it would hurt all homeowners, especially young families and senior citizens.”
