Pittsboro, NC - The Executive Committee of the Chatham County Democratic Party has voted to give $1500 to The Young Democrats of Chatham County to help it recruit new members and to work on community projects of special interest to young people. The grant is conditioned on the chapter’s affiliating with the state organization, North Carolina Young Democrats, by September 1.

Alexandra Solomon, a freshman at UNC-CH and newly elected president of the Young Democrats, sought funding from the Executive Committee at its meeting on August 17, 2006 in Siler City. “We are thrilled and energized by the support and help we have received from the party,” she said. “We intend to actively and fully participate in the political process in the county.”

The Young Democrats held their first meeting in July. Since that time, they have elected officers, held a fundraiser, produced a brochure, planned a monthly newsletter and selected the issues on which they will focus in the coming months: recreation, jobs and schools in the county. “Additionally, of course,” Solomon said, “We will be supporting and assisting the Democratic candidates in the upcoming election.” Future plans also include training for the group by a professional community organizer.

The newly elected officers, in addition to Solomon, are Stewart Sayers, Vice-President/Communications and editor-in-chief of the newsletter, Lori Sisco, Vice-President/ Membership, Amon Anderson, Vice-President/ Outreach, Stephanie Jackson, Secretary, and Sharee Donoghue, treasurer.

The next meeting of the Young Democrats will be on September 23, 2006 at 5:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro. Chatham County Democrats between the ages of 16 and 28 are encouraged to join. Car pools may be possible if needed.
