Pittsboro, NC - Pittsboro and Chatham County recreation board member Andrew Allden filed for an open seat on the Pittsboro Town Board of Commissioners on Friday, July 17, 2009. Allden, the track meet director and alumni relations coordinator for UNC Chapel Hill track and field, is filing for the seat vacated by two term incumbent councilman Chris Walker.
Allden, his wife, Tara Disy Allden, and their daughter Kathleen, now eight, moved to Pittsboro five years ago from Conway, SC. In Conway, Allden was the head men’s cross country and track field coach at Coastal Carolina University. Tara, an attorney, is the Operations Director for Restoration Systems in Raleigh, a wetland and stream mitigation and restoration firm. Tara is on the Chatham County Environmental Review Board.
Allden received bachelors’ degrees in English and history from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He also earned a master’s degree in sport management from the University of Georgia in Athens, where he also did graduate studies in history. Prior to his head coaching job at Coastal Carolina, Allden was the cross country coach and assistant track and field coach at the University of Georgia, UNC-Chapel Hill, Tulane University and the University of South Carolina. During his twenty-three year track coaching career, he coached a number of elite national and Olympic runners. He is currently the personal coach for the fourth-ranked men’s 800 meter runner in the United States. Allden also conducts clinics for track and field coaches across the country on behalf of USA Track & Field.
